Discover a huge increase in fuel efficiency!
This is a more detailed comparison of the two heat generating methods under
discussion
Generator specs
This
Isuzu diesel generator produces 12.5 kilowatts of electricity per hour using .91 gallons of fuel to do it.
At
120,000 ‘btus’ per gallon heat content in diesel fuel, and by useing .91 gallons it releases 109,200 ‘btus’
in combustion heat. At an 80% heat recovery efficiency from the motor cooling system and exhaust cooling, it would provide 87,360
btu available for house heat out of burning the fuel.
However,
having 12.5 kws of electricity to convert to heat also, and that at a rate of 10,000btu for every kw.
Then
12.5 kw x 10,000btu >
> >
> > =
125,000
Add
the .91 gallon x 120,000 ‘btus’ @ 80% > >
= 87,360
Net
heat realized out of .91 gallons of fuel > > = 212,360
The Boiler Solution
Direct venting Oil fired Boilers
Oil-Fired, Hot Water Boiler for homes with chimneys
The Tobago boiler provides hot water heat in a variety of sizes (from 80,000
to 238,000 heating capacity BTU/HR) to serve a wide range of homes. An approved chimney is required.
The boiler design is proven in service to be reliable. It is easy to maintain
and economical in its purchase price and fuel consumption. The boiler can be ordered with flame retention Beckett, Carlin
or Riello oil burners.
The boiler features a swing-open burner door that gives full access to the
combustion chamber and burner nozzle. A split jacket provides easy access to the flue passages of the heat exchanger. The
attractive and durable jacket is powder-coated to resist scratching and insulated to retain heat. The heat exchangers are
constructed to meet the standards set by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers

The Generator and Furnace Comparison
The Generator
The Isuzu diesel
generator produces 12.5 kilowatts per hour using .91 gallons of fuel to do it.
At 120,000 ‘btus’
per gallon heat content in the fuel, and by useing .91 gallons it releases 109,200 ‘btus’ of combustion heat.
(@ 80% efficiency = 87,360 btu net)
With 1kw = 10,000btu
of heat. Then 12.5 x 10,000 = 125,000 btu.
Add .91 gallon x
120,000‘btus’ @ 80% efficiency = 87,360 btu.
Net heat realized
out of .91 gallons of fuel > > = 212,360 btu
The Furnace
Using a normal oil
furnace to burn the fuel in and with an average 80% heat recovery efficiency as well would produce 87,360
btu in total. (no electricity)
(see the highlighted 1 gallon per hour consumption row in the table above)
Comparitively;
The generator reaps 212,360
btu thermal energy out of the same .91 gallon of fuel due to the equvilent of 125,000 btu more heat generated electricaly
as well, and when this is compared to the 87,360
btu this is a
HUGE increase in fuel efficiency!
Simply put, using a round
estimate of 85,000 btu required to make up for heat loss on a 1,000 square foot house , then 212,360 btu would heat two
and a half houses of 1,000 square feet each! 212,360 ÷
85,000 = 2.498
The choice is ours!
